One of the oldest neighborhoods in Philadelphia, originally settled by Swedish immigrants in the middle of the 17th Centruy - prior to William Penn. Originally a fishing and agricultural community, in the 18th Century Fishtown emerged as a major industrial, chemical and ship building center. Manufacturing jobs began to erode after the Second World War, although some small light industry remains. It is now primarily residential, and emerging as a neighborhood closely connected to center city Philadelphia.

Great tot lot. Slow-pitch softball leagues, nightly games spring-fall. World center for Cheese Steaks: Pat's and Geno's across the street (order 'Wiz wid') sidewalks and streets crammed with locals and tourists gobbling down comfort food. Lots more ethnic eateries (one Zagat-rated with others nearby) plus bodegas, internet cafe. South end of famed Italian Market. Narrow streets, s-l-o-w traffic. Butcher shop with cages of live birds spilling onto the sidewalk. A Harley dealership. Confluence of Italian, Mexican, Lebanese, various Asian communities. Crossing-guards on school mornings. Trashy sidewalks, dense, happy atmosphere. Visit any time, and again on a Saturday afternoon. Passyunk ('Pashunk') Square section of South Philly.
